A message from Keya White:
Good morning world.
If you know me via facebook primarily, you know (a) I very rarely update my status unless it involves an upcoming event and (b) rarely update my cover photo(s). So here’s the event in my opinion you and especially Elk Valley residents need to know about.
As you may or may not have heard there is currently a proposal to rezone two properties that border my parents’ acreage in Fernie to allow for 2.5 acre lots and 8 single family dwellings (aka a subdivision.) The RDEK Planning Department has advised against allowing for this, as has the City of Fernie and the Ministry of Transport has concerns about increased traffic/highway safety issues too. It goes against the Elk Valley Official Community Plan (OCP) and numerous policies and wishes outlined in it by the residents who live in the area. And yet it has been approved unanimously by the RDEK board at the first two readings and there is only one more to go.
Today, Wed. May 24th there is a public hearing at 7pm at the Fernie Family Centre (beside Catholic Church.) Whether or not you can attend, if you have a few spare minutes today please write a quick note to those in the position to make a decision on this important issue. Click here (https://secure.wildsight.ca/lizardcreek) for addresses and a form you can fill out with your own letter/concerns. Thanks so much to all those who have already done so.
In my opinion this issue is about thinking globally and acting locally… Lizard Creek is an incredibly significant wildlife corridor in the southern Elk Valley and if we lose it to housing/development it is a major loss for the southern BC Rockies and the province/Canadian Rockies too. With so many other rural residential properties available in Fernie right now (The Cedars, Timberlanding, Montane, Burma Road Estates, Riverside and Alpine Trails to name a few) there is plenty of land available to those looking for it. These areas should be fully developed before we consider moving into the undeveloped outlying wilder areas that make Fernie so special to both those who live and visit here.
Thanks for listening, taking the time to write our elected officials with your own views and maybe see you at the meeting tonight. Have a great day.
