Birthday Weekend At Loon Lake

There’s nothing like celebrating a birthday with amazing friends, camping at a local lake. The “local” part is important because we ended up camping with about fifteen extra Fernie families, on top of our group of 5 families, and the kids came home with their cups full and passed out for 13 hours. Everyone left the campground happy, even my husband who had to go to the hospital for 5 stitches on his finger.

Camping is one of the only ways I can completely relax and let go. My phone was off for four days and that felt amazing. The kids were busy and happy with new and old friends. The lake was glassy smooth and clear and the campfire roared for hours each night. Life is truly good.

Opening Day At Fernie Alpine Resort

Fernie Alpine Resort Summer Opening

Opening day doesn’t mean much to my family other than the addition of another fun play area for the kids. The kid’s aerial park is a fantastic and shaded place to play for free all summer long.

We are also contemplating signing up the kids for a couple summer camp days. I’ve heard good things about the mini griz rangers.

These are the programs available:
• kids outdoor adventure camp for 6-12 year olds
• camp out at lost boys cafe for ages 8+
• bike camps for ages 8-17
• mini griz rangers program for ages 3-5

From BC Parks website:

“Due to popularity and size of the campground, BC Parks has implemented a maximum stay policy of 7 nights in the peak season in this park (June 15 to Labour Day inclusive). Reservations are made through BC Parks’ Discover Camping Reservation System.”

Also, interesting to note, all weekends seem to be booked up until mid September.

Camping With Friends At Big Pine

Big Pine Campgrounds - Lake Koocanusa - rhino ride

A couple weeks ago we stayed with some friends at their trailer on Lake Koocanusa. It was certainly more on the glamping side, which isn’t our usual, but I can’t say I hated all the extras. I immediately saw the benefits of having a place that’s all set up (to the max) with only clothes and food to worry about. The kids were so happy with their dirty faces, dusty clothes and wind blown hair – it was such a treat to see them out there doing something different. We went mid week, which was brilliant as the beach was empty and the lake was quiet. Our hosts were of the most and we relaxed more than we would have if we had gone camping, that’s for sure, plus, we all boarded their jet boat and the kids just wanted to go faster and faster.

We’re just loving summer time and feeling so blessed that such a place is just a mere 45 minute drive away. Thanks, friends, for inviting us to your palace on the lake!

Views Of Fernie : New RV Park Construction Site

New RV Park construction in Fernie BC (West of Gof Course)

At least, that’s what I was told this was. A new RV Park would be good for all those RVs that drive by Fernie every summer. Perhaps they’ll stop and spend some time here instead.
