Joseph Boyden In Fernie – This Will Be An Interesting Evening

Joseph Boyden in Fernie BC - Booked! Fernie Writers' Series
It’s going to be a busy one. I would get there early. Don’t worry, there’s cheese, beer, chairs (limited) and you’re surrounded by books. It’s going to be a wonderful night.

That’s an exciting lineup. I am especially interested to attend the Joseph Boyden and Esi Edugyan readings.

Booked! Author Series At Fernie Heritage Library

booked_fallenUsually I just post the poster of an event and call it a day but tomorrow night at the Fernie Heritage Library we have, what I would consider, a potentially very interesting reading that you might not want to miss. I know I don’t want to miss it – I even rescheduled my book club meeting because of it.

The author of Fallen, Kara Stanley, tells the story of the tragic day her husband fell off a roof and became paralyzed and I believe, I haven’t read the book, she was told her husband would never walk again due to brain and spinal injuries…but it’s also about the healing power of music. And her husband, Simon, will be there tomorrow night performing with Red Girl. Amazing. I am so excited to go!

Thursday, October 15 at Fernie Heritage Library – 7 pm doors open.

Booked! Will Ferguson Tonight

booked! Will Ferguson at The Fernie Heritage Library

My own introduction to Will Ferguson was when I read Happiness in 2001, a novel about what would happen if everyone became happy – and it’s not as blissful as you might think – and then I was flipping through his book How To Be Canadian in a downtown Vancouver bookstore and had one of those laugh out loud moments and ended up buying it 2 minutes later. It’s interesting how you can have a history with someone you’ve never met.

Now he’s coming to Fernie to talk about his book 419. 419 doesn’t sound like a comedy but perhaps those who know how to laugh are in tune with all those other emotions that make a story more human. I haven’t read it yet, though. Come out and see him at The Fernie Heritage Library tonight at 7 pm – the last of the Booked! Fernie Writers’ Series.

Booked! John Vaillant at Fernie Heritage Library

booked! Writers Series - opening band Joshua's BurningLive band, to get us all warmed up, Joshua’s Burning.

What a fantastic night! (as I live tweeted last night) The Booked! Fernie Writers’ Series really knows how to put on a great event. Cheese and fruit plates by Le Grand Fromage (next time they will have Fernie Brewing Co, so it’s just getting better and better,) a great live band and then there was John Vaillant. Not a single person moved during his readings from The Jaguar’s Children and his story of how the book came to be was also riveting. As much as I love a good music festival or a little life drawing session, it felt good to attend an event that speaks to you, makes you see the world in a different way and, if you feel like it and I generally don’t, get involved in the discussion.

The next Booked! author will be Will Ferguson. Perhaps I’ll post a little blurb from his book How To Be Canadian, here and there, to built some excitement.
