Fernie Chicken And Bee Dilemma

On Wednesday, December 1st I sat in on the Public Town Hall Meeting regarding Backyard Hens and Beekeeping in the City of Fernie. It didn’t get as heated as I thought it would, mostly due to the mediator (if that’s the right title) and it looked as though a few people could have gotten a bit more…expressive? louder? Most comments were under people’s breath or whispered to neighbours…if I had a neighbour, i would have said something along the lines of “People are crazy.” or “Don’t tell anyone but I could mow down on a chicken burrito right now. I didn’t eat dinner.

On the discussion panel there were three permanent players – Frank – the local CO, Dawn Deydey – Fernie Community Eco-Gardens and Sarah Smith – started Bear Aware Program.

Beekeeping in City of Fernie - Bee Sketch by Brina SchenkBeekeeping

Backyard Beehives in City of Fernie - Sketch by Brina SchenkThe first half of the 3 hour session was about Beekeeping, which I was prepared to yawn though, but it ended up being the part I enjoyed most. Representatives from Fernie’s two main apiaries were on the panel – Elk River Apiaries and Fernie Mountain Honey.

The main concern brought up by these two businesses was the possible tragic scenarios from untrained beekeepers – diseases, bear attractant, poor bee conditions.

Presented solutions :
• designated beekeeping areas
• strict bylaws to limit beekeeping to those who are certified and have the right knowledge to responsibly keep bees in the city all year round.

I’d like to know how many people in the City of Fernie want to have bees in their backyard…anyone? If I was to take on beekeeping, I would want to have that the right knowledge in the first place… you can’t just pick up a bee colony at Canadian Tire and start making peanut butter and honey sandwiches.

Concerns from the public:
• electric fences, will they harm my children or dogs
• will we be swarmed with bees
• will there be more bears in Fernie due to backyard beehives

Backyard Chickens in City of Fernie - Chicken Sketch by Brina SchenkChickens

The second half was the “expressive” portion, at times, of the evening. Some people want chickens and others don’t want chickens in Fernie. I can’t say there were more representatives on one side or the other…there were just two very clear opposing sides.

The apiaries were replaced with Steve Kuijt, who has had a chicken coop in his backyard for many many years.

The main concern brought up by Steve Kuijt was that the eggs were hard to get at…and once, at the beginning, a few dogs got in his coop and ate all but one. Oh and he’ll never get a rooster again.

Presented solutions:
• permits for chicken coops
• an enforced and strict bylaw
• training, education resulting in good husbandry

Concerns from the public:
• adding to the already long list of bear and other predictor attractants
• will it smell
• will they be noisy and annoying
• will I be able to sell my home when a chicken coop is right next door
• what about owners who don’t take care of their chickens
• who will enforce the bylaw, especially knowing that other bylaws are so regularly ignored

People Becoming Lazy - Sketch By Brina SchenkIf this interested you at any level (not my rant) the issue is going to council on December 13th at City Hall, 7 pm. They’re looking for feedback from the public, if you want to write a little something. A drop-off box is at City Hall.

International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day 2010

Did you know it is International Literacy Day? And a little about it (from U.N.): Literacy is a cause for celebration since there are now close to four billion literate people in the world. However, literacy for all – children, youth and adults – is still an unaccomplished goal and an ever moving target. A combination of ambitious goals, insufficient and parallel efforts, inadequate resources and strategies, and continued underestimation of the magnitude and complexity of the task accounts for this unmet goal. Lessons learnt over recent decades show that meeting the goal of universal literacy calls not only for more effective efforts but also for renewed political will and for doing things differently at all levels – locally, nationally and internationally.

There’s something going on at College of the Rockies…starting at 11:30 AM, in support of ILD.
