Knitting Communities Together for Avalanche Awareness
Let’s work together to knit the longest scarf in the Kootenays.
This is a project that Heaven Stitch & Design and Mary Weselake would like to launch and I encourage all the mayors in the East and West Kootenays to participate.
The plan is to have each town in the Kootenays knit a piece of the scarf with the donations going to the Canadian Avalanche Centre in support of avalanche awareness. This could be a fun way to raise money for the cause and get communities working together.
Here is what we would like to do. Each town will start to knit a scarf on Feb. 1st in a different colour ( Fernie will knit with red yarn). Find a place in your community that can be a gathering spot for people to knit. For example, anyone will be able to go into Heaven Stitch and Design in Fernie and knit 1 row of the scarf for $1 or 6 rows for $5. They will then sign a participant’s card. We ask that all participants use the same yarn and 4.5 mm size knitting needles. We will continue this project for the month of February with all the money raised going to the Canadian Avalanche Centre.
The challenge that I am putting forward is to see which community can knit the longest piece. At the end of February, each town will send their scarf to Fernie where volunteers will then stitch the pieces together to determine the length of the full scarf. The world record is 33 miles! Fernie will display the scarf for a week before sending it, together with cards and donations, to the CAC in Revelstoke.
I am challenging the communities of Sparwood, Elkford, Golden, Kimberley, Nelson, Revelstoke, Rossland, Valemount and Invermere because you all participate in Avalanche Awareness Days in one way or another. Let me know what shade of yarn you want to use so we can make this a brilliant scarf that identifies each community by colour. Mary has some yarn that was donated and is available for this project. Please call me at 250 278 0481 or email at email@example.com to sign on to the challenge.
Let’s wrap a scarf around the Kootenays. Come join the fun and help save lives.

Come in to Heaven Stitch & Design (571 A 2nd Ave) on Thursday, Jan 27th from 7-9 to kick off the event! After that, anyone can come into Heaven and add to the scarf. It will cost a small donation to add to the scarf.
I believe the name should be changed to Heaven Stitch, Design and Read. When you enter their adorable shop, you’ll be greeted with the delectable scent of old books and lots of them.
