The Fernie Originals - Book Launch
Tonight is the night that The Fernie Originals book will be launched into the world at Clawhammer Press in Fernie. Come out and meet the team behind the book that showcases Fernie from a local’s perspective. A bit of history, recipes, photography. A nice coffee table book I’m sure. I haven’t seen it yet but I plan to.

Clawhammer Press – 661 2nd ave – 8 to 10 pm. Serving wine and snacks, of course.

A Literary Journal For The Elk River Valley

From Keith Liggett:

In recent months a group of writers banded together to cooperatively publish an Elk Valley literary magazine.  Tentatively titled Speaks: a literary journal of the elk river valley, the journal will accept poetry, fiction and non-fiction.

The writers forming the cooperative studied together in Keith Liggett’s writers’ workshops over the fall and winter. They started the journal to showcase their writing and invite other writers in the valley to join them in the publication. The group will accept submissions until May 8, 2011. Acceptances and rejections will be sent out within 14 days of the close of the submission period.  All submissions received after May 8, 2011 will be returned.  Submission’s content need not be about the Elk River Valley, but the author must be a resident or have a substantial connection to the valley. For this purpose the Elk River valley is considered from the juncture with the Kootenay River to the headwaters above Elkford.

Brina Schenk of Two Owls Collect will design and print the journal. A painting by noted local artist Mary Menduk has been chosen by the group to illustrate the cover.

The plan is to invite all the authors accepted for inclusion in the first issue to read at the anniversary 5/20 spoken word may 20th at the Central. This evening will be filmed and potentially a DVD produced to accompany the journal.  Publication of Speaks will be in mid-summer 2011.

For submission details and standards please email Keith Liggett at keith@saw.net or down load the pdf.

A Letterpress Workshop

By Brina Schenk

At the end of February I attended the Letterpress Workshop, put on by The Arts Station and Keith Liggett, and this is my photo documentation of that spectacular experience. I managed to come out of the so-much-to-take-in weekend workshop with a little over 20 prints of my very own birth announcement letter. Look at me and my organizational skills! Twenty five weeks away and I’m ready to inform – in style.

From Lethbridge comes Sonis McAllister and the Barracuda Orchestre.  Bubba Tres ends the night with their laser, confetti, visually-overloaded spectacle.
