It’s me again. I’m still over here playing with my kids and having little adventures. I’m not spending too much time at the computer but my brain never stops coming up with new ideas and art projects. I’m not sure I’ll have time for the dumpster painting project this year, it’s from Friday, August 30th- Sept 2nd, right after an evening selling my art in Kimberley and just before school starts. If you’re keen on doing a dumpster this year, you need to get your idea in by the end of July.
Right now I’m trying to squeeze in a WonderWalk story for Wapiti, a mural proposal for the Beanpod building, a painting for Art Expo, prep for our next Abstract Lion Art Club in August and another big idea that I’ll tell you about later. There’s so much going on! I love it all but it makes me tired just looking at this list.
The dumpster project is fun and super casual. This year there’s even a $500 fee for selected artists. So that’s a great idea. Who knows. Maybe I’ll even fit a dumpster in this year. Dear me. I’m going to bed.

I’ve been participating in the Dumpster Art Project for a few years now and this year I will once again paint a garbage bin. Each year I’m more and more hesitant to join because Dumpster Art day always falls on the hottest day of the summer and my bin is always in the sunniest part of the street. I’m not so good with direct sunlight for 8 hours straight, especially now that I’m living with vitaligo. This year, however, The Arts Station has changed things up a bit. It’s now an evening affair with a DJ and beer tent and good chill vibes. I’m extremely happy with this decision. So, if you’re looking for a cool night out on June 30th, myself and a handful of other local artists will be tackling some enormous blank canvases and could use a little heckling.
From The Arts Station’s website: “The Arts Station in partnership with The City of Fernie is pleased to announce a Call for Entry for the 5th Annual; ‘Out of the Box: A Dumpster Art Project’. Out of the Box is a project in which 6-12 commercial trash and recycling dumpsters are transformed into works of public art by regional artists. The dumpsters will be painted in a live art event from 4-9pm on June 30th, with live music and a bar in Station Square.”

I’m all set to paint a dumpster this Sunday in the blazing hot sun! But because it’s too much work to get done in a day, us painters will be out painting starting Thursday night and each night leading up to Sunday. Friday night there will even be a DJ (DJ Ray) at Station Square making it a little more enjoyable and if you’re downtown you should come say hi.
Dumpster day is truly the best. It’s got a cool block party vibe to it. There will be activities (decorate your own trucker hat being my favourite), button making, spray painting station, music, live painting and who knows what else. It’s so fun. See you there!
Some extra details from Facebook:
“Come down to Station Square on July 9th to see this year’s winning dumpsters painted by our local artists. Enjoy the sounds of Jay Ray’s music, make some buttons with your children at our Kids Art Corner and see the magic of the dumpster transformation!
This year’s artists are: Peggy Black, Brina Schenk, Joey Kosolofski, Dejana Lukac, Tanya Kindrat, Leanne-Raye Timmons, Drew Hampson and Scott Cable.
The Dumpster Painting will coincide with the first Sunday Socials from Fernie Chamber of Commerce so you can enjoy this arts event from within a pedestrianised Downtown.
Out of the Box is a public art initiative by the City of Fernie and in collaboration with Southeast Disposal. Out of the Box is a project in which 10 commercial trash dumpsters will be transformed into works of public art by regional artists.
Out of the Box is intended as a way for our regional art community to bring beauty and creativity to a seemingly mundane item like a trash dumpster.”
